Hi, friends! I hope you enjoyed your weekend. We had some particularly nasty weather in PDX, which afforded us the excuse to do a whole lot of nothing. And it was surprisingly refreshing. :)
I'm thrilled to be kicking off the week with this new print. I'm calling it Sum of its Parts #1, and here's why:
One night last week, I drew and painted all sorts of textures and shapes in watercolor, gouache, pencil and pen. I had a blast, pretty much destroyed my office space and spent a remarkable amount of time scraping paint off my hands and out of my hair. I also polished off half a bag of white cheddar popcorn in the process, which I'm not proud of.
Next, I scanned all the pieces and started playing with composition. I loved how each shape and scribble came to life in a new way when interacting with the others.
So that's where I got the idea for "Sum of its Parts". Based on the idiom "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts", I hope to explore the idea that we are made greater by all of the stuff we experience. The relationships we have, job transitions we go through, moves we make, etc. all interact and shape who we are. When you view any one thing by itself, it may seem insignificant, or even ugly. But when you view them together as a whole, they become beautiful. A bit cheesy, I know, but I like the idea and I'm excited to play around with it.
Oh, and I added a "#1" on the end because I hope to do a lot more prints like it. Consider this a series within the Weekly Print Series. A very hipster take on Inception. :)
I hope you enjoy this print as much as I enjoyed making it! Don't forget about the 10% discount on Sum of its Parts #1, available until Sunday night.
Love & Respect,
